Terms of use

The short version, and then the rest.

Read the newsletter, use the scores, quote them with attribution, and do not treat any of it as professional advice. That is most of it.

Using what we publish

Every edition, verdict, component score, and the checker are free to read and free to use. You may quote them in a presentation, a board packet, an article, or a class, including commercially, provided you attribute the score to The Hype Index and link to the edition it came from. Each edition carries a citation block written for exactly that.

What you may not do is republish an edition in full as though it were your own, or present a score as ours after changing it. If you disagree with a score, publish your own reasoning and say what you changed. That is the entire point of publishing the components.

What this is not

Nothing here is legal, financial, investment, medical, or security advice, and no edition creates a professional relationship of any kind. A score is a structured judgment about the strength and use of public evidence. It is not a recommendation to buy, sell, adopt, avoid, or deploy anything.

Scoring a claim is not a statement about the people or organizations who made it. We score evidence and its use. A high Hype Index does not mean anyone acted in bad faith, and we say so on the method page because the distinction matters.

Accuracy, and what happens when we get it wrong

Every figure is checked against a primary source before it runs, and every source is linked. We still get things wrong. When we do, the edition is corrected in place and a dated correction note is added to it, with the original wording preserved. Scores that change show both numbers and the reason. The corrections policy is published and we hold ourselves to it.

Sources we link to are not under our control. They move, change, and disappear. Where a number carries a date, use the date and pull the current figure yourself before you put it in front of anyone.
